Hierarchy of Typography

Jan 2019 – May 2019

Typography—Layout—Composition

During my time at Meaningful Works (MW), the Creative Director provided several of the MW staff a course in typography to strengthen and polish the team’s typography, layout, and composition skills.

Under Milka Broukhim’s guidance, every week we were asked to create 15 compositions on an 8 in. x 8 in. canvas, with the copy provided, with one font, and with certain rules. The goal of the class was to be able to create hierarchy and dynamism in our composition even with the rules given each week and refresh our minds of the design and typography rules.

Chapter 1 : One Size and One Weight

Chapter 2 : Two Sizes and One Weight

Chapter 3 : Any Size and Any Weight

Chapter 4 : Reverse Type and Lines

Chapter 5 : Experimental

We were encouraged to explore multiple analog mediums and methods to achieve the experimental compositions. Some of those methods are burning, baking, freezing, ripping, melting, distressing, distorting, projecting, warping, and more.

Chapter 6 : Color and Image

Images and patterns used are of the Bradbury Building located in DTLA, which is where the Meaningful Works studio is located.

Hierarchy of Typography Book

At the end of the class we were asked to compile our work and put it in a book. The concept of my book is layers and growth because every week, as we’re given more and more freedom with our compositions, I felt as if my knowledge of typography is expanding and growing. Please use the arrows to go through the book.

Documentation of the physical book is coming soon!
